A Mother’s Legacy

The Skin I Leave Behind

The Skin I leave Behind

A poem about my second trimester with you; the physical changes I noticed and the inner emotions I held as I evolved.

One chapter closes,

three months marking the first phase—

a seed planted, taking root.

As we bloom into what comes next,

I begin to peel in quiet surrender,

as if each flake of skin knows

it is no longer mine to keep.

In my planted season,

I was nestled in familiar skin,

a reflection I had known

for twenty-five years.

But now, the mirror tells a different story.

Stretch marks etch themselves in hidden places,

writing new chapters upon my breasts.

My skin is uncertain—

my face glows with something sacred,

yet my neck darkens, shadowed by change.

I am shedding,

not just my skin, but a version of myself,

exchanging one form for another,

a quiet metamorphosis.

My lower back aches

beneath the weight of generations,

muscles straining

beneath the task of creation.

I feel subtle flutters,

soft whispers from within—

is it you, or my body

voicing its quiet hunger?

This body is no longer my own.

The skin I leave behind

is not a loss, but an offering—

proof that I existed,

that I evolved,

that I became.

The Moments We Swore We’d Remember

The Moments We Swore We’d Remember

There are moments in motherhood we swear will stay with us forever. The way our baby’s tiny fingers wrapped around ours. The weight of their head on our chest, their breath steady and warm. The way their laughter filled a room, making the whole world feel lighter.

But then time does what time always does—it moves forward, carrying us with it. And suddenly, those once-crystal-clear memories start to blur at the edges.

It happens slowly.

You try to recall the exact way they used to mispronounce a word, but it slips just out of reach. The lullaby you hummed night after night becomes a little harder to hear in your mind. You look at an old picture and realize that moment—the one that felt so ordinary at the time—is now irreplaceable.

And you ache for the details you swore you’d never forget.

Why We Need to Hold On

Motherhood is a constant letting go. From the moment we first hold them to the moment they take their first steps away from us, we are always in transition. And it’s beautiful—but it’s also heartbreaking.

Because the truth is, we don’t just forget the moments. We forget ourselves in them.

The mother we were when we rocked them to sleep at 3 AM. The mother we were when we whispered you’ve got this to ourselves in the mirror. The mother we were when we felt overwhelmed, exhausted, and in love all at once.

Capturing our story isn’t just for them—it’s for us. It’s so we can look back one day and say, I was there. I lived those moments fully. And I remember.

How to Capture the Moments (Without Overwhelm)

I know what you’re thinking—but how do I even find time to document my motherhood when I’m barely keeping up?

It doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be real.

Here are some simple, meaningful ways to hold onto the moments before they slip away:

1. The One-Sentence Journal

Some days, writing a full journal entry feels impossible. But one sentence? That’s doable. Write down one small moment each day—something your child said, how you felt, a detail you want to remember.

One day, those single sentences will tell the most beautiful story.

2. The “Five Senses” Memory Trick

When you want to preserve a moment in your mind, stop and focus on your five senses:

• What do you see?

• What do you hear?

• What do you feel?

• What do you smell?

• What do you taste?

This practice helps your brain anchor memories in a deeper way—so when you look back, you can recall more than just the moment itself, but how it felt to be there.

3. Voice Notes & Videos

Sometimes, writing doesn’t capture the fullness of a moment like hearing it can. Take quick voice notes when your child says something funny or sweet. Record short videos—not just of them, but of you talking about motherhood in real time. One day, these recordings will be a treasure.

4. The “Future Letter” Method

Write letters to your child at different milestones—first steps, first day of school, a random Tuesday when you just love them so much you have to put it into words. Tuck them away for them to read later. They will hold pieces of you they never got to know.

5. The 5-Minute Daily Prompt Journal

If you’re looking for a way to easily and consistently document your journey, I created a 5-Minute Daily Prompt Journal for Moms to help you do just that. Simple, guided prompts to help you pause, reflect, and capture the heart of motherhood—without the overwhelm.

Because your story matters. Your moments matter. You matter.

One Day, You’ll Be Glad You Did

Mama, I know it feels like you’ll always remember. I know life is moving fast, and the thought of adding one more thing to your plate might feel like too much.

But one day, when the house is quiet and the little hands aren’t so little anymore, you’ll wish you had captured just a few more moments.

Not for social media. Not for anyone else.

But for you.

So that one day, you can sit with your memories, hold them in your hands, and whisper to yourself…

I remember. I was there. And it was beautiful.

Psalms 139 13-15

Psalms 139 13-15

A poem about my first trimester with you; how God stitched you within my womb.

The days stretched long.

Each unique stitch being woven within me,

brought a wave of nausea,

each breath heavy with exhaustion.

Not a bed nor sofa could comfort the aches,

so I curled into the quiet corners of myself,

wondering how something so small

could unravel me so completely.

Like a Psalmist, I whispered for mercy,

pleading for the sickness to pass.

Modeling my sorrowful prayer after great wisdom.

Like the favored King,

I sought ways to connect my heart to You.

And in the stillness, You answered—

Grace pressed against my womb,

a calming Hand soothing my child

as You continued to sew.

Joy and sorrow tangled like roots beneath my ribs.

Some days, laughter ached in my cheeks;

on others, they were heavy from tears.

I am the womb,

the sacred framework where you were fearfully

and wonderfully made.

I held you before I ever held you,

sang to you before you had ears to listen.

I was tethered to you before I knew

how deep love could run.

And though I swayed between weakness and wonder,

though my body waged its battle,

you grew—

A quiet Psalm unfolding within me.
